What is a normal rate of hair loss for male pattern baldness?
Written by reader on November 23rd, 2008I have a male friend who had pretty thick hair when I last saw him about a month ago. I just recently saw him again and now he is fairly bald at the top of his head. Is this rate of hair loss a normal rate for male pattern baldness, or should I be worried that he may be sick? Is there somewhere I can find out about this?

If your friend has lost substantial hairs within 4 weeks itself then it most probably is not male pattern baldness but rather due to some other medical reason. Accute illness or infections do cause short term hair loss but hairs lost in such conditions usually regrow when the health gets back to normal. Normal hair loss is considered to be below 100 hairs lost per day anything above that is not normal and would eventually lead to baldness in most cases unless treated properly.
