If you’re looking for a male pattern baldness cure then you are probably trying to figure out a way to stop losing your hair. Most of the time when you have this type of hair loss issue, you will notice that you are losing hair from the crown area of your head.
It will first appear as if your hair is thinning and when you don’t do anything about it; it usually results in a bald spot that gets bigger and bigger. This is very unattractive and for most men it is also depressing and will shrink there self confidence.

Most men that experience this problem feel that when you don’t have a desirable grade of hair on your head it can prevent you from getting job promotions and even destroy your ability to attract really good looking women. If you are experiencing symptoms like the ones I just described including the loss of confidence and low self esteem then this male pattern baldness cure I am about to describe is for you.
But before I give it to you I need you to understand that hair loss is a problem and in order for you to get the best results from which ever type of treatment that you decide to go with you need to act on it as soon as you start noticing the first signs of trouble which is usually the thinning of your hair.

None the less it can pretty much be controlled from any stage just as long as you take some kind of action. With that said here is a male pattern baldness cure in the form of three tips that you should implement right away.
1st Tip
Being that the main problem of your hair loss is caused by the over production of a certain hormone called DHT it would be a wise move to attack this problem head on. The best and safest way to do this is to use an herb called Saw Palmetto. This is an all natural approach and it will help you to control the production of DHT by keeping it to a safe level.
2nd Tip

Once you do away with the high levels of DHT your hair follicles will be able to absorb the necessary vitamins and minerals needed to start growing strong, thick hair again. In short they will be hungry for this so the best thing to do next is to make sure that the vitamins and minerals are there for them to absorb. The best way to make sure that the right amounts are available would be to take a multi vitamin everyday.

3rd Male Pattern Baldness Cure Tip
Now you have done two very important things that will help you to start regrowing hair but your not yet finished as this final step would just take a few minutes to implement and it is really a very necessary step which will ensure that the last two steps are going to be effective.

If you do the last two steps without this one then your hair follicles may not get the nourishment that you are trying to send it so to ensure that they get the nourishment that they need you need to do this step too. You will need some minoxidil 5% and it should be rubbed onto the scalp where ever you want the hair to start growing back.
Once you complete all 3 of these tips then you will have done everything to get your hair regrowing again.

The condition is characterized by a typical pattern of receding hairline at the temples and hair thinning on the crown. It can progress to partial or complete baldness in some cases. This is the cause of hair loss in about 90% of men and more than one third of men are in their thirties. The percentage of men affected by MPB increases with advancing age.

How to identify MPB?

Excessive loss of hair
Hairline recedes from the front, temples
Thinning of hair on the crown
Bald patch on the top of the scalp
Partial baldness
Complete baldness at a later stage

How does it happen?
The male hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is important for the normal male sexual development. However, in some cases, the hair follicles are genetically sensitive to this hormone and exposure to it results in shrinkage of the follicles. This shortens the lifespan of the follicles and prevents them from producing hair normally. Hair follicles in the temples and crown of the scalp are more sensitive to this hormone and hence hair loss affects these areas more prominently.
Genetic cause is a strong factor for developing male pattern baldness and almost 80% of balding men have a history of baldness in their father or grandfathers.

Stages of male pattern baldness according to the Norwood Hamilton Scale:
Stage 1: No hair loss. The head is full of hair.
Stage 2: Minor recession at the front of hairline and some temporal recession. This stage may not even be called as balding.
Stage 2A: Recession progresses across the entire frontal hairline.
Stage 3: Temporal recession deepens.
Stage 3A: Frontal recession keeps progressing backwards.
Stage 3V: Besides the loss of hair in the frontal and temporal regions, there is early hair loss from the crown (vertex).
Stage 4: Frontal and temporal hair loss progresses and there is enlargement of the bald patch at the crown.
Stage 4A: Hair loss progresses past the mid-crown.
Stage 5: Bald area in the front enlarges and starts joining the bald area at the crown.
Stage 5A: Bald patches in the front and at the crown fuse and keep enlarging. The back part of the bald area is narrower are compared to stage 6.
Stage 5V: The bald patch at the crown enlarges although it has still not fused with the bald area at the front.
Stage 6: Frontal bald area and the one at the crown are fused and continue to enlarge. The back part of the bald area is wider than in stage 5.
Stage 7: Extensive baldness where only a strip of hair remains at the back and sides of the head.

There are many things that can cause excessive hair loss. For example, stress, illnesses, certain medicines like blood thinners (also known as Anticoagulants), medicines for high blood pressure, gout,or heart problems, birth control pills and Antidepressants. Excessive intake of Vitamin A, hormonal problems – if your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, if male or female hormones called Androgens and Estrogens are imbalanced. Some infections such as fungal infections of the scalp, an underlying diseaselike diabetes or lupus, scarring due to wearing pigtails, cornrows or using tight hair rollers as the pull on your hair causes a type of hair loss called traction alopecia which is permanent in nature. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals used in permanents (also called “Perms”) that may cause inflammation (swelling) of the hair follicle, permanent or male or female pattern Baldnesscalled androgenetic alopecia and so on.

If treatment is not sufficient for your Hair Loss, it is possible to try various hairstyles or wigs, hairpieces, hair weaves or artificial hair replacement. Let us name and understand these available solutions:-

1.Hair Weaving:-Human or artificial hair are used to changethe natural hair appearance by weavingadditional hair withthe natural hair or by covering the natural hair entirely with human or synthetic hair pieces. Resetting may be required along with the growth of natural hair.

2.Hair Microwefting:-A non-surgical, painless, quick and safe treatment, involving bonding of human hair. The natural, permanent new hair require no change in lifestyle. You can do whatever you want! Under this treatment, hair units are clipped by using specially designed clips that remain invisible.

3.Hair Bonding:-A silicon compound is used to bond additional hair with your natural hair unit to your scalp. The additional hair that is used may be synthetic or human.Based on the quantity and pH of the sweat through the scalp as well as the weather conditions, resetting is required every one to three months.

4.Hair Transplantation:-A surgical technique that moves skin carrying hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to the part that is bald (the recipient site). Grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to bald scalp.

5.Hair Regrowth With Stem Cell Technology:-Stem serum is a fat extract which helps hair regrow through supplying essential nutrients to the hair follicle. This liquid is penetrated into the scalp by a series of micro-injections. It is safe and has no side effects.

6.Hair Fall Treatment With Mesotherapy:-A non-surgical cosmetic medicine treatment. A number of injections of pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, plant extracts, vitamins, and other ingredients are penetrated into the subcutaneous fat to compensate for the vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that your body lacks due tostress, which in return improves the tissue environment and stimulates hair growthright down to your hair follicles!

7.Hair Spa:- Hair Spa Nourishes your hair, head and follicles with an herbal or olive oil massage, steaming, shampooing, and conditioning. This treatment allows you to kill the dead cells, open up the pores and remove the excess oil that blocks and suffocates your skin. It also helps normalize oil secretions, increases blood circulation, eliminates impurities from the pores of your skin and repairs previous damages, which encourages a healthy growth of hair.

8.LLLT or Low level laser therapy is a proven therapy to enhance hair growth by increasing the blood flow and directly transferring the light energy to the hair follicles of the treated area. It’s a safe procedure which will have no painful effects, aiming at making your hair softer and healthier.

Procerin, created by Speedwinds Nutrition Inc, is a prescription free OTC (over the counter) drug widely utilized as a way to manage hair thinning as well as a recession hairline. It’s essentially a completely natural botanically derived program. Procerin is accessible in oral tablet as well as topical preparation and this can be used every day to control hair thinning. Because of the ingredients such as herbs, minerals and vitamins, there isn’t any need for a doctor’s prescription to buy this as stated therefore this does not call for frequent visits to your physician. The components of the product consist of gotu kola, saw palmetto, eleuthero root magnesium, nettles, zinc sulfate, and muira puma root.

This product is an effective option for thinning hair reversal in males, which is mostly brought on by Androgenetic Alopecia. The thinning of the hairline and the typical hairline recession also identified as widow’s peak is the most acknowledged result of Andorgenetic Alopecia. The production of a chemical substance identified as DHT (dihydrotestesterone) is definitely the chief cause for this situation in most men. The process naturally involves this particular enzyme in the male’s body, the 5-alpha-reductase, changing the hormone testosterone, accountable for the characteristics of a male directly into DHT, resulting in the thinning or recession of the hairline. Procerin functions at this stage as a natural Dihydrotestosterone inhibitor. The five alpha- reductase together with specific herbs and minerals (which are supplied by the natural supplements present in Procerin) when blended into a suitable mixture can stop the effects of DHT and also assist with the re-growth of hair. This is actually predominantly relevant for guys inside the age group of 18-35.

The makers, Speedwinds Nutrition Inc, have concentrated particularly on creating a hair loss management supplement using 100 % natural ingredients like herbs and minerals with the single intention to prevent the creation of DHT.

Procerin functions to block the DHT without making a reaction with your testosterone which is the male hormone thus keeping the whole process totally free from generating a harmful side effect unlike the prescription drug Propecia (finasteride) that often reacts with testosterone and produces a lot of side effects that impact the sexual drive of the user. Usually, men start to lose hair in their twenties and the hair thinning increases far more rapidly as they get older. There is a certain amount of hair loss among men but when they grow older, the hair’s natural growth cycle isn’t in a position to keep up and make up for the hair loss. For that reason, as mentioned, the best advantages of this item are for younger men and people with hair still growing. These individuals have a lot more hair count and would probably show more improvement. Typically the efficacy of Procerin for guys after this age bracket i.e.

Procerin is therefore advised for young men who are looking for a natural over the counter drug to combat hair loss. It really is advised that Procerin be used for a minimum of one to two months before looking for visible improvements. Although there are some users who have reported improvements in much less than a two weeks, using the product for a longer period of time is recommended.

Baldness prevention would be one of the most confusing matters that countless hair loss sufferers have to decide about these days. Hair loss is a prevalent condition that can be easily observed in adults especially in men; however, women are also afflicted by this in some circumstances of their life such as pregnancy and menopause which is absolutely due to hormonal disorders. Men on the other hand are irked by this awful condition due to heredity or genetics which seems to be the most common factor why almost all men experience androgenic alopecia or male pattern hair loss.

Androgenic alopecia is completely known as the main provider of social discomforts and profound embarrassment in men across the globe. This upsetting global phenomenon can inescapably commence in males, starting from their late teenage years to the age of 50. At 50, the loss becomes very visible, displaying precise patterns on their head which starts with a receding hairline at the front and a blatant bald spot at the top or crown area. This type of hair loss occurs because the hair follicles of men at the front and top areas are genetically susceptible to baldness. Overtime, these hair follicles are acted upon by the hormone Dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This hormone binds with receptor site in the vulnerable hair follicles. The entire process slowly degrades the hair follicles’ ability to produce healthy thick hair, resulting to a permanent hair loss.

The hair follicles on the sides and back of the head are typically resistant to going bald. These follicles still continue to thrive and grow healthy thick hair due to their genetics, which makes them resistant to the damaging effects of DHT. There are varying hair loss treatments that are being serviced and offered in different hair care clinics, salons, and even supermarkets today. For centuries the minoxidil topical solution has been widely utilized by people with hair loss problems and that they have considered this mode of defense against the condition as fairly effective. But there are just inevitable common side effects of minoxidil that made most of the consumers now turn to herbal and organic hair thinning solutions.

An herbal ingredient like the saw palmetto extracts is already perceived by reputable physicians as efficient as synthetic medication in battling male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia like Propecia (Finasteride) but without systemic side effects such as loss of libido and is strongly contraindicated in women. A prominent hair loss product that uses the power of saw palmetto extracts is Leimo. Leimo has been scientifically proven to reduce the production of DHT by blocking the activity of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase.

5-alpha reductase enzyme converts testosterone to DHT and is present in the hair follicles and scalp at a very high level. Other ingredients block the androgen receptors and stimulate hair regrowth. Leimo aids in revitalizing and protecting the hair follicles, making the follicles capable of producing healthy thick hair. Leimo can also provide you with their handheld laser device which can substantially improve your thinning hair by producing cold laser therapy, making your hair thicker, stronger, and healthier. Visit Leimo Baldness for more details.

If you are seeing more of your bald scalp than you’d like, you are not alone. Male pattern hair loss accounts for about 95% of almost all cases of baldness in men. Initially, baldness was associated with ageing, but occurrence of hair loss in younger men has generated a need to study the root cause of this problem. An intriguing question that arises out of it is why some men are more prone to hair loss than others?

The root cause of male pattern baldness

The prevalence of male pattern baldness varies from population to population based on personal habits and diet. But the most common cause of male hair loss is hormonal in nature. Men suffering male pattern baldness develop receding hairline due to thinning of hair from the cross sides of forehead.

Hair follicles are tiny sacs in the scalp that grow hair. Normally, a hair grows from each follicle for a period of three years, after which it sheds and a new hair grows in its place. In some men, testosterone gets converted into another hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Hair follicles develop a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone and shrink in size. They shrink to such an extent that they are not able to sustain hairs and even regrow new hairs. As a result, hair starts to thin on the scalp leading to a receding hairline. A typical ‘U’ or ‘M’ pattern of hair appears on the scalp areas as hairs from temples and top of the head also fall.

Pill treatment for male pattern baldness

Propecia finasteride is a prescription-only medication that can offer positive results for men suffering from male pattern baldness. It works by blocking the action 5-alpha reductase to convert testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. This male hair loss pill also helps the hair follicles regain their ability to grow new hair. In a five-year study, men with mild to moderate hair loss experienced significant hair regrowth with Propecia. About 42% people had no further hair loss after using this drug. Some other important points about Propecia include:

1. Propecia should be considered as a long-term hair loss treatment to see any positive results. Usually, it takes about three to four months to see any noticeable effects, and up to one to two years for full hair growth.

2. If you stop taking Propecia finasteride pill in the middle of treatment, you are likely to lose any hair you have gained within a year of discontinuing it.

3. Side effects are not common with Propecia. For instance, about 2 in 100 men treated with Propecia reported loss of libido, but regained their sex drive after discontinuing this medication.

4. A study has shown that Propecia can be given as a preventive treatment to people at risk of developing prostate cancer.

5. This male hair loss pill is not available on the NHS, so you can order Propecia online from registered clinics on valid prescription.

6. Women are not recommended to take Propecia, especially pregnant women shouldn’t even handle broken or crushed tablets.

Male pattern hair loss is not a health condition as such, but statistics would tell you that people pay just as much for treating this type of hair loss as they do for other severe health problems. The reason is very simple: people like having a full head of hair; it gives them a nice sense of body image and a youthful look. male pattern baldness treatments may range from using medication to wearing wigs and other concealing methods. While using wigs and ‘combing over’ can give you temporary solution to this problem, a better choice would be to go for a long-term treatment.

What is male pattern baldness?
Most balding men lose their hair to androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male pattern baldness. It is caused by hormonal and genetic factors. In this condition, you lose your scalp hair over a period of 2-5 years in a specific pattern. First the hairline recedes gradually, which is followed by thinning of hair on top of the head. Eventually the receding hairline meets the hairless part on the vertex and forms an ‘M’ shape, leaving a thin covering of hair on either side of the head.

What is the long-term solution to androgenic alopecia?
You can prevent male pattern hair loss with the help of medicine. Propecia finasteride is often the drug of choice for most men looking for a long-term solution to this type of hair loss. As it happens over a period of time, you cannot go against the clock to stop it or possibly regrow new hair. Finasteride can about 2-5 years to stop you from balding and possibly grow new hair. A 5-year clinical study with men using Propecia revealed that 33% men had no further hair loss after using Propecia for 2 years. About 66% men experienced hair regrowth while only 1% men continued to lose hair as before. At the completion of the study, 42% men stopped losing hair while 48% men had hair regrowth. The percentage of failure was just 10% after 5 years of Propecia hair loss treatment.

How does finasteride work?
So there are facts to support the effectiveness of finasteride. It is available as 1mg pills indicated to be swallowed whole with water. It works by lowering dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, so that the hair follicles do not shrink. The hormone DHT, along with a gene variation that you can inherit from either parent, triggers male pattern baldness.

What if I do not get the results?
It usually takes 12 months to find out whether or not Propecia is working. Most men taking this medicine have reported a significant reduction in hair loss after taking Propecia pills continuously for 3 months. Probably after 6 months you will notice further improvement and by 12 months, you may be able to enjoy the full benefits of the finasteride baldness treatment. But make sure you keep reporting to your doctor at regular intervals, because if there is no noticeable improvement after using Propecia for a year, you may have to look for another hair loss treatment.

Have you ever experienced seeing your scalp more and more as you check yourself in the mirror? You are not alone. Two out of three men in the United States are said to develop male pattern baldness or MPB during their lifetime. Baldness among men usually starts with thinning of hair at the hairline, followed by the appearance of a bald patch found on the crown of the head.

MPB is a form of alopecia. Alopecia is characterized by loss of hair from the head and other parts of the body. There are many forms of alopecia, but the type associated with MPB is androgenic alopecia. This is to differentiate male pattern baldness from the patchy hair loss known as alopecia areata, loss of all head hair known as alopecia totalis, and loss of hair all over the body known as alopecia universalis.

The occurrence of baldness among males is attributed to a lot of factors. The primary factor, of course, is genetics. Some men have high levels of hormones that make hair follicles sprout shorter and finer strands before eventually dying out. Sometimes, these hormones even stop hair growth from the follicle completely. In the long run, the stock of hair becomes depleted resulting in the condition we know as baldness.

Men and women both carry the genes responsible for the occurrence of hair loss. Medical professionals contend that it usually does not have bearing as to whether which side of the family men inherit MPB from. However, a person”s chances of getting bald also increase by 50% if someone from the immediate family is already balding.

However, you should not mistake normal hair loss from male pattern baldness. There are times when you might experience noticeable hair loss. Though this may require diagnosis, this condition can be due to other factors such as diet, medications, improper hair care, and certain diseases. Improper hair care includes hairstyling routines such as ponytails, braids, dreadlocks, as well as hair relaxing solutions and hot hair irons. Hair loss of this kind can be treated successfully.

Since the 1950s, hair transplanting has become the most popular procedure among men with MPB in terms of permanent hair replacement. But these days, new innovations in hair replacement have surfaced, from topical creams and shampoos, to laser hair therapy to stimulate growth.

A typical hair transplant involves surgically implanting follicles to the balding areas of a patient to stimulate hair restoration. If the baldness of the patient is very extensive, several surgical sessions might be needed. Additional hair transplant sessions may also be added after a few weeks, in order to fill the gaps when the implanted hair follicles start growing in clumps. It takes approximately two years before you can actually see the most ideal results. Though this procedure is relatively costly, men are still clamouring for this treatment for MPB.

Hair baldness is a problem for millions of Americans and over one billion people around the globe. A common misconception is that it only occurs to men. It is not true, as most women suffer as well. Keep reading to see some new cures for male pattern baldness in males and females.

1. Topical Minoxidil. Loniten is the most popular topical solution. When you visit an over the counter shop, there are many generic forms which are somewhat cheaper. Loniten, whose active ingredient is minoxodil, is a cream or foam-like substance that you can use or apply to your head. However, it should be observed that it does not work on the hairline, only the top or crown of the head. There is also a particular formula for women, as male pattern baldness is different than the thinning that women face. So if you are a female, be sure to buy Loniten for women.

2. Propecia. This cannot be taken by women, it is only for men. It is an everyday pill that must be consumed for the whole of your life. The generic name is known as Proscar, and it is now available. You will require a prescription before you can take Propecia or Proscar. See the skin doctor to obtain the required prescription amount. Again, this medicine does not work on the front of the hairline; it works only on the crown. Nevertheless, in younger males who begin consuming it on time, it has worked in keeping hair on the front head.

3. Hair transplant. No longer are the periods of bad plugs that appear similar to a doll’s hair. Science has progressed to the point where a hair can be replaced by one follicle at a time, leading to results that are indiscernible or undetectable unless under a microscope. It is an outpatient form of treatment and the person will be back at work in the space of a day or two. It should also be observed that the strip method is also becoming out of date. That is where a strip of the back of your head is removed, and then dissected, your head is sewed up and the hair transplanted. Nowadays physician can remove hair from the back of your head one by one, leaving perfectly no scar at the back.

4. Laser light comb. It is among the new cures for baldness. This exciting advancement was of late approved by the Food and Drug Administration. It has been shown that light therapy can help re-grow hair.

Male pattern hair loss, medically known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of baldness millions of men experience. It does not happen overnight; it may take you 2-5 years to notice that half of your scalp hair is gone. While there is no complete cure, you can prevent your head from balding with proper and timely treatment. Talking of treatment and there is Propecia finasteride – one of the most sought after FDA-approved medicines to prevent androgenic alopecia and in some cases, to stimulate new hair growth. You can buy Propecia online from the comfort of your home and stop losing your locks to this genetic and hormonally induced condition.

Your baldness in depth

Every day you lose up to 100 hair daily out of 100,000 to 150,100 hair strands. This hair fall is normal as every two to six years, the hair finishes its growth and resting cycle and reaches its shedding phase. The reason men suffering from male pattern baldness lose more hair than normal is that their follicles become sensitive to a hormone commonly known as DHT. This hormone is medically known as dihydrotestosterone. When your hair follicles become sensitive because of age, hormonal changes or any other factors, you experience hair loss.

How to keep the follicles alive

If you know how to keep your hair follicles alive, you are well on the road to stop male pattern hair loss from occurring. One prescription medication, Propecia, which contains a chemical ingredient known as finasteride can help to avoid further shrinking of hair follicles because of DHT and can also help in reviving hair follicles that have already shrunk. Finasteride basically inhibits the level of DHT and help in stopping hair loss and in hair re-growth.

Spot the pattern

Unless and until you don’t know if your hair loss is because of male pattern baldness or some other reason, there are less chances of you seeking a treatment. Therefore, the first step is to understand the pattern of your hair loss. If you see bald spots in the middle part of your head and then from the crown and the sides, eventually which might lead to or has already led to an ‘M’ or horseshoe shaped bald area – you are suffering male pattern baldness. It is advisable to start treatment well before the ‘M’ shape is formed.

Genetic factors

Sometimes, DHT is not solely to be blamed for your hair loss. It can also be genetic in nature. Most scientists agree that hair loss in inherited from mother’s side of the family, though it has not been established.

Propecia at rescue

The good thing about Propecia is that it can not only help you to stop further hair loss but also reverse it. More than 90% men have experienced benefits and claimed that their hair loss is stopped within just a couple of months. 60% men have claimed to see new hair growth where they had totally lost hope. This drug is not only very effective but also safe with only 2% men saying they experienced side effects. These side effects too are not very serious and reversible in nature.

Becoming bald can be a very disappointing and depressing prospect for many people. Having a bald head can affect almost all aspects of a person’s life. However, the modern medical field is now able to treat the baldness condition using a variety of surgical and non-surgical treatment methods such as hair transplantation, Rogaine, Propecia and low light therapy.

The only permanent solution to hair loss and baldness, hair transplantation is a surgical treatment option which is performed in two ways. One is strip harvesting and the other is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In the strip harvesting method, the surgeon removes a hair strip from the back of the head. Then individual grafts of hair from this strip are planted in the areas where baldness has taken place. Strip harvesting hair transplantation normally involves three phases. The first phase involves the harvesting of the extracted strip of hair; the second phase involves the dissection of the extracted hair strip into individual grafts of hair and the last phase involves the implantation process of the grafts into the bald areas of the head.

In comparison to the strip harvesting hair transplantation method, FUE method is known to be minimally invasive. Unlike the strip harvesting method, this method does not require the removal of a strip of hair from the back of the head. Instead, FUE utilizes a method which involves carefully removing individual grafts of hair with a state of the art specialized device. As a result, the results achieved from this method are guaranteed to be highly natural. And, it’s very hard to notice that a hair transplantation process has been done.

In addition to surgical hair transplantation methods, baldness is treated with many other treatments as well. While the results can be very convincing, they are not permanent. Once the medication is stopped, the hair loss resumes.

Rogaine is one such hair loss medication used by surgeons today. This is a FDA approved topical hair loss medication which can stimulate and make hair grow in the areas of baldness. Although results start to appear after a few months, it has been found out by researches that twice daily intake of this medication for around four months has resulted in 62% decrease in hair loss in men. Hence, if the patient is compliant enough and motivated, the results from Rogaine are highly possible.

Another hair loss medication in use is Propecia. This is also an FDA approved orally taken pill. This medication is given to act on the chemical (dihydrotestosterone) which is responsible for causing hair loss in men. Similar to Rogaine, the results from this medication are seen after about six months. One of the major drawbacks of this pill is that it can cause various sexual side effects in patients such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.

Lastly, low light therapy can be used to treat baldness as well. One of the recently FDA approved methods include the Hairmax Laser Comb. Similar to Propecia and Rogaine, this treatment option takes around six months to provide tangible and visible results.

Alopecia, also known as baldness, has been with the human race as far back as history can record. While modern man has a few options when it comes to finding a baldness treatment, his ancestors tried some bizarre and downright dangerous cures for hairloss.

Baldness Cures in Ancient Times

Egyptians had perhaps the best baldness remedy available: they shaved their heads and wore elaborate braided wigs. Both men and women cropped their natural hair close to the scalp; in Egypt’s hot climate, going bald or nearly bald just made sense. Despite the Egyptian fondness for wigs, though, hair loss was still a concern. One common treatment was a salve made from goose fat and crocodile dung.

Cleopatra and her physicians famously recommended a baldness cure containing the ashes of burnt mice, ground horse teeth, and deer marrow for Julius Caesar. The emperor of Rome was presumably too grand a figure to receive the standard goose-and-crocodile blend that the Egyptian man on the street used. As Caesar’s distinctive forward-brushed hairstyle may have been history’s first “combover,” it’s doubtful that Cleopatra’s remedy worked.

Medieval Baldness Remedies

Medieval farmers swore by cow saliva as a baldness treatment. The licking action was also thought to stimulate hair growth. The term “cowlick” describes a swirl of unruly hair today, but the word’s origin may have been this medieval baldness cure.

It wouldn’t do for a king to stoop in a field and let a cow lick his head, though, so there were more upscale remedies for royalty. Medieval medicine relied on using ingredients from sources that were furry, shiny, or showy in hopes that those properties would transfer to a bald head. One thirteenth-century French recipe involves an oil made of bear fat, the ashes of peacock feathers, and crushed pearls.

The Age of Wigs

Baldness cures almost disappeared in the 1600s thanks to King Louis XIV of France who hid his bald pate under a towering wig. Wigs made of human hair for the wealthy and horse hair or cotton for the less well-to-do were the fashion for both men and women. The practice of wearing these elaborate headpieces didn’t end until the early part of the nineteenth century.

Snake Oil Baldness Cures

When wigs disappeared, baldness remedies flourished in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. One of the most popular came from China originally. Snake oil–fat rendered from actual snakes–was an ancient Chinese remedy for arthritis pain, but unscrupulous salesmen repackaged it as a baldness treatment. Many left out the snakes altogether and just added color and fragrance to common cooking oil. The term “snake oil” has come to mean a quack remedy sold by a peddler who cares more about a quick dollar than about curing a buyer’s ills.

Stem cell science has put forth a theory that reports that adult stem cells can be used for hair regrowth in males who are suffering from male pattern hair loss. Scientists have been focusing on capabilities of stems cells for many years regarding their role in treating male pattern baldness and other types of permanent hair loss.

Stem cell theory of hair regrowth

It has been discovered by Professor George Cotsarelis and colleagues at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia that in men with male pattern baldness, stem cells are present in the hair follicles of both bald and hairy regions in the scalp. Also, it is found that bald people have same number of stem cells as anyone else.

Adult stem cells have the ability to self-renew, which makes them different from other cells in the body. In this self-renewal process, a stem cell can replicate itself and make new stem cells, which are further capable of dividing and transforming into specialized cells. When these stem cells are manipulated into hair follicles, they replace the shrunk follicles and can produce new hair. With further research in the stem cell science, the thought of suffering from male pattern baldness will never again be of concern.

Impaired stem cells may cause male pattern baldness

It has been found that faulty stem cells can also be the cause of onset of male pattern baldness. A research was done on 54 men with male pattern baldness. The hair follicles were compared from bald and hairy regions of these men. Similar numbers of stem cells were found in both bald and hairy patches. But in the bald patch population of hair follicle, the progenitor cell was depleted. It was concluded that the stem cells in hair follicles of bald patches are defective in nature and are unable to mature into follicle progenitor cells that are necessary for hair regrowth.

Researchers concluded that there is a wide prospect of reversing baldness as there are normal numbers of stem cells in bald patch of the scalp. They hope to develop a treatment to reactivate the stem cells in the hair follicle and restore the normal function of hair follicles. This can lead to increased levels of progenitor cells and normal hair growth.
