Male Pattern Baldness and Treatment
Written by Male Pattern Baldness Writer on February 1st, 2010Going bald or anything related to hair loss is something we all cringe upon thinking about, but unfortunately it is something millions of adults have to face. Out of all the forms of baldness, male pattern baldness is one of the most common, it starts out with a thinning and receding of hairline. The cause of male pattern baldness is when follicles on the head, which normally hold the hair in place, shrink to a very tiny size resulting in failure to produce new hair. Hair commonly falls out and is then replaced by new hair, but in this case the new hair slowly stops coming in as the follicles become smaller. The hair loss starts at each lateral side of the forehead & works its way back, forming a pattern almost in the shape of an “M” and can also cause thinning of hair on the crown. In some people it can eventually result in almost complete hair loss but others are less severe.
How common is MPB? It is said that 40 million men in the US alone suffer from male pattern baldness. In fact, 78% of men 80 years of age & older are affected by this. That’s not to say that only the elderly are affected by this, it even affects males in their early teens, however the severity of it does increase with age. Elderly are also more likely to be victims of any other problems related to hair loss.
Male Pattern baldness is typically genetic but can also be caused from physical factors such as exposure to certain medications & steroids or other factors that would affect hormone levels. Researchers also believe that high insulin levels can result in hair loss, there are studies & tests being done right now to confirm this. Each of these different factors can cause the follicles to shrink therefore preventing the growth of new hair.
Hair Loss can be very hard for some men to deal with. They may feel unattractive or fear that they look ‘old’. Luckily in most cases the follicles don’t completely die out therefore new hair can still grow with proper care and treatment.
