Is this a sign of male pattern baldness?

Written by reader on November 22nd, 2008

I have fairly curly hair.  The hair on the sides of my head grows much faster than at the top. My hair line is not receding.  I don’t know if if I am just imagining it but my hair does seem to be getting thinner from the center and and back. I don’t have any one in my family with male pattern baldness. Is this a sign of male pattern baldness? If so, what can I do to prevent it or slow it down? I am a healthy 22 year old male (very worried about losing my hair).

Too young to worry. If it happens it happens. Besides it’s only YOUR opinion your a “healthy 22 year old male”. You may be a very unhealthy 22 year old male.

First of all, calm down!!! Everyone loses hair everyday, new hairs grow everday. Everybody’s hair grows irregularly(slower on one side than other, one area less than another). Some thinning is normal as one ages(though you do seem to be too young for that). All of this is nothing to worry about.
Now with that said, you could be going bald. Stop using hair conditioner and other products in the area that you are concerned with. Stop using fabric softener on your towels. Both of these product can block the hair’s ability to breath and be healthy. Also LIGHTLY shampoo and towel dry your hair, you could be damaging the follicles by vigorous rubbing. If you are going bald, Propecia might slow it or regrow hair( I could have the name wrong). Call a dermatologist for the correct name of the product. Good luck and if all else fails, find a really nice hat (not a ball cap) or join the “Hair Club for Men.”
